Based in North Yorkshire, it is fitting that we have a department dedicated to the work of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson (1876–1955). Thompson established his furniture-making business at Kilburn, near Thirsk, and became famous for the carved mouse that appears on almost every piece. A leading figure in the 1920s Arts and Crafts revival, his work is now prized by collectors in Yorkshire and beyond.
Thompson inspired a wider group of Yorkshire craftsmen who also worked in English oak. Their pieces remain in strong demand and feature regularly alongside Mouseman furniture in our auctions. The mouse trademark is still used today in the Kilburn workshop, now run by Thompson’s descendants.
This department is led by David Elstob, whose long-standing passion and academic specialism in Robert Thompson ensures clients receive clear and authoritative guidance on these highly sought-after pieces.
