If you’re thinking of selling an item − or even an entire collection − Elstob Auctioneers is here to help. With our specialist knowledge, experienced team of valuers and global online reach, we work hard to achieve the best possible prices for your possessions.
The information below answers some of the most common questions about selling at auction, but please do contact us if you’d like further details or advice.
In the past, major city auction houses were regarded as the only way to achieve the highest prices. Today, with the growth of online bidding and global digital marketing, buyers can be reached anywhere in the world, no matter where your item is located.
At Elstob Auctioneers, we make full use of these opportunities. Our marketing combines online platforms, social media, press coverage and direct buyer outreach to ensure your items are seen by the most interested audiences. By hosting global online auctions, we make it easy for bidders in the UK and overseas to take part, helping to secure the strongest possible results.
We are also committed to being open and transparent. There are no hidden charges, and with no fees for photography or insurance, our straightforward commission rates make us one of the most competitive auction houses in the region.
We offer free, no-obligation appraisals for individual items or entire collections. You are welcome to visit our Ripon office for an in-person consultation, or if it is more convenient, we can arrange a home or business visit − particularly useful for larger items or collections. For added ease, you can also request an online valuation by completing our simple form click here.
Following our specialist valuation, we will advise a guide price based on current market trends. You may also choose to set a reserve price, which guarantees a minimum sale figure for your item.
If you are unable to deliver items yourself, we can help organise collection and transport to the saleroom. Please contact us for details.
Your item will be entered into the most suitable auction, carefully promoted to the right buyers and offered for sale. If the item sells, you will be notified of the result and provided with a settlement statement, with payment made within twenty-eight working days, as long as we have cleared payment from the buyer. Auction results are also published on our website shortly after each sale. Should your item remain unsold, you may choose to re-enter it into a future auction or collect it within thirty-five days.
Our standard commission rate is 15% plus VAT. We do not charge for unsold lots, and there are no additional fees for lotting, photography or insurance. This clear and competitive approach ensures that you receive the maximum return from your sale, while keeping the process simple and transparent.
