A LARGE ADAMS & CO PARIAN POLITICAL PORTRAIT BUST OF JOHN BRIGHT (1811-1889)

Parian ware's bright colour and crisp texture, a ceramic invented in the early 1840s in imitation of marble and named after the pure white marble of Paros, the finest media in Ancient Greece, made it ideal for mass-producing affordable sculpture. Icons of the great political leaders Gladstone and Disraeli were made in great numbers for the parlours of the affluent Victorian middle class, for whom terracotta and marble were perhaps too expensive and plaster too fragile.
