Born in Lincolnshire, Lodge was educated at home and became an accomplished taxidermist before attending the Lincoln School of Art. He travelled worldwide in search of birds and sport and was an authority on falconry. George greatly admired Archibald Thorburn's works, and admiration was returned when Thorburn recommended Lodge for a commission from the New Zealand Government in the 1910s.

Lodge's works are famous worldwide, particularly in the UK and USA. His obituary in The Times in 1954 said, "In the painting of birds of prey, he had no rival in any country."
